Family Planning / Reproductive Health (FP/RH)

Provision of voluntary family planning/reproductive health (FP/RH) services and information is the cornerstone of many PHE projects. Where feasible and where there is unmet demand, PHE projects should offer a full range of FP/RH services to couples of reproductive age and to sexually active young people. While trained community-based distributors of contraceptives can also offer some FP/RH services, other services require trained health professionals in clinic-based health facilities. The range of services available will depend on national and cultural contexts.   Documents in this section include information and technical guidance on FP/RH in the context of PHE programs and projects.

This Reference Guide is intended for population, health and environment (PHE) community-based distributors (CBDs) and PHE adult peer educators (PEs) who have attended the training on the PHE Community-Based Distribution and Peer Education System and who work on integrated PHE activities. It includes key information from the training that PHE CBDs and PHE adult PEs need when providing community members with information on PHE, including family planning (FP) and modern contraceptive methods.

It was noticed by Save the Children (STC), that in the Philippines, many communities’ family planning (FP) needs were underserved. To combat this lack of assistance the PESCO-DEV project created a FP session to educate couples in the reproductive age (15-49 years old). This action session guide is intended to supply family planning information where it is most needed, targeting families that rely on fishing as a livelihood.

This brief pamphlet offers quick ideas for talking to a coastal community about Reproductive Health (RH), Family Planning (FP), and Information Education and Communication (IEC), key subjects in PATH Foundation Philippines Inc.’s Integrated Population and Coastal Resource Management (IPOPCORM) initiative. With the community-based distribution (CBD) system in mind, the pamphlet gives suggestions on what to bring when speaking to a group, how to introduce FP and contraceptives, and what questions to ask to stimulate thoughtful discussions.

This training guide was developed for use in courses to train population, health and environment (PHE) Community-based Distributors (CBDs) who work on integrated PHE activities. A PHE CBD is a Ministry of Health (MOH) community volunteer, local storeowner, storekeeper, accredited drug dispensary, community village worker, or a member of a people’s organization (PO) or a cooperative, etc. that/who is trained to provide information on PHE, family planning (FP) methods, and the stocking and sales of FP commodities.
2011 | BALANCED Project | 216
This training guide was developed for use in courses to train population, health and environment (PHE) Adult Peer Educators (PEs) who work on integrated PHE activities. PHE Adult PEs are eligible adults—men and women—who are willing to be trained and volunteer to talk to their peers about health, family planning, environmental protection and PHE linkages as well as to refer eligible clients to PHE community-based distributors (CBDs) or health centers as a source for FP commodities.

In Africa, 20 percent of the population is comprised of youth between the ages of 15 to 24 years. On this continent, young women are vulnerable to unintended pregnancies that can negatively affect their health, education, and life goals. According to a 2007 Guttmacher Institute study of about youth in Africa, teens are concerned about and want to protect themselves from both unplanned pregnancy and HIV, but misinformation about sex and its consequences is common. Many adolescents do not receive the education and services they need.

The manual was developed by BALANCED Project staff and conservation and rural development organizations in training individuals to integrate community-based family planning and health into PHE projects through the use of community-based distribution and peer education approaches. Field-tested in Tanzania, Zambia and Ethiopia, the guide uses a unique training approach where training participants “learn-by-doing”, such as leading certain segments of the training themselves.

The Integrated Population and Coastal Resource Management Initiative (IPOPCORM) is a project created to improve the quality of life of communities that rely on coastal resources while promoting biological diversity and productivity among coastal ecosystems. Working in selected provinces in the Philippines where population pressures are endangering critical marine habitats, the project tries to encourage integration between family planning (FP)/ reproductive health (RH) and coastal resource management (CRM) strategies.

This is a training curriculum for a one day refresher course for Community Health Outreach Workers (CHOWs) conducting training for IPOPCORM Couple Peer Educators (CPEs) previously trained on reproductive health, family planning, and coastal resource management. The curriculum is intended to aid CPEs in enhancing their work in the community by providing accurate information and addressing myths and misconceptions on vasectomies and bilateral tubal ligation (BTL) and enhancing skills in talking to teens about reproductive health and sexuality.

The Integrated Population and Coastal Resource Management (IPOPCORM) initiative was created by PATH Foundation Philippines Inc. to provide a better quality of live to communities relying on coastal resources. The IPOPCORM initiative has worked to achieve this by integrating family planning (FP) and reproductive health (RH) into coastal resource management (CRM) strategies. The initiative focuses on livelihood opportunities and dependable food security while ensuring the protection of biological diversity and productivity.

The Integrated Population and Coastal Resource Management (IPOPCORM) initiative by PATH Foundation Philippines Inc. was created to promote a better quality of life to coastal communities while maintaining the biological diversity and productivity that their livelihoods depend upon. This goal is achieved through an integrated approach, integrating family planning (FP), reproductive health (RH), and coastal resource management (CRM).

The Integrated Population and Coastal Resource Management (IPOPCORM) initiative was created in response to the need for intervention in the coastal Philippines. Coastal resources had become threatened by the dependence of the rapidly growing population on fishing. The IPOPCORM initiative integrated family planning (FP), reproductive health (RH), and coastal resource management (CRM) to promote a better quality of life in coastal communities, while protecting biological diversity and productivity.

The Integrated Population and Coastal Resource Management (IPOPCORM) initiative was developed by PATH Foundation Philippines Inc. as a response to the need for intervention among communities in the coastal Philippines. A fast growing population, in which the majority depends on fishing as a livelihood, had rapidly depleted coastal resources in these target communities.

This training curriculum was created as a guide for Community Health Outreach Workers (CHOWs) in conducting a refresher course for Youth Peer Educators (YPEs) previously trained in youth sexuality, reproductive health, and environmental education. The curriculum provides a review on human fertility, contraceptive methods, STDs and HIV/AIDS and the link between reproductive health and coastal resource management.
