Providing nutritional care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS is an important part of caring at all stages of the disease. HIV infection is characterized by progressive destruction of the immune system, leading to recurrent opportunistic infections and malignancies. Malnutrition is one of the major complications of HIV infection and a significant factor in advanced disease. Malnutrition and HIV negatively affect each other. HIV infection may result in poor nutrition as a result of insufficient dietary intake, malabsorption, and altered metabolism.
