The new publication by MSI and WHO 'Long-term contraceptive protection, discontinuation and switching behaviour: Intrauterine Device (IUD) use dynamics in 14 developing countries' has just been launched and could really add value to this great toolkit resource!
Thanks for sharing this new resource on discontinuation and switching behavior of IUD users in 14 countries. This was added to the Essential Knowledge and Country Experiences tabs. It's also important to note that Marie Stopes has several other recent resources on IUDs that we just added to the toolkit, too, in the Country Experiences tab:
Even though the IUD is not commonly used in sub-Saharan Africa, this report shows promising results from Marie Stopes, where they have more than doubled IUD insertions in their program from 2008 to 2010 (from about 71,000 insertions to more than 167,000 insertions). The report gives an overview of a number of innovative approaches that Marie Stopes has implemented, as well as recommendations to expand long-acting and permanent contraceptive options.
While Marie Stopes found that early and relatively high discontinuation of IUDs is a common practice in Vietnam (about 27% had discontinued use at 36 months), discontinuation rates were much lower in the Philippines (17% had discontinued at 36 months). Read the two above reports to find out more about the different dynamics in these two countries.
