Injectables
It needs training but idea is good
Injectables use
Women using DMPA have an injection every three months (four times a year)
Women using NET-EN have the first injection within the first 5 days of a cycle, the next three injcetions are to be given at intervals of 8 weeks, all further injections are required every 12 weeks
Additional information to post
Jim Shelton of USAID has issued a new Pearl on injectables (11/24/09)that you can include in the Essential knowledge page:
Q: We are impressed with the popularity of injectable contraceptives among our clients and would like for our community health workers to provide DMPA in the community. Is there precedent and evidence-based support for this idea?
A: Yes. In June 2009 WHO, USAID and FHI convened a technical consultation in Geneva to examine the available scientific evidence and programmatic experience. Their main overall conclusion:
"Given appropriate and competency-based training, CHWs can screen clients selectively, provide DMPA injections safely, and counsel on side effects appropriately, demonstrating competence equivalent to facility based providers of progestin-only injectables."
English and French versions of the report "Community-based health workers can safely and effectively administer injectable contraceptives" are attached. [Note the one in English is already posted under Essential Knowledge.]
