This Spanish-language pamphlet outlines the steps for three different water treatment methods: SODIS, boiling, and chlorination. It also lists three health messages: Each day, drink at least 8 glasses of disinfected water in order to have good health; Always wash your hands before eating and after using the bathroom or latrine; Drink disinfected water and avoid diarrhea.
Listed below are the steps for each water treatment method.
SODIS method: 1. Use clear plastic bottles and clean lids; 2. Fill the bottles with clear water and put the lids on tight; 3. Place the bottles in the sun in the morning, on the roof of your house, or on top of a calamine; 4. At the end of the day, collect the bottles. If the weather has been cloudy, you must leave the bottles for one more day; 5. Let the water cool down and drink it from a clean glass or cup.
Boiling method: 1. Fill a clean pot with clear water; 2. Place the pot on the fire and when the water appears to be bubbling, let it boil for four more minutes; 3. Put the lid on the pot and allow to cool; 4. Pour the boiled water directly from the pot into a clean glass or cup; 5. Drink the boiled water, always using a clean glass or cup.
Chlorination method: 1. Fill a clean bucket or plastic drum with clear water; 2. Add the amount of drops of chlorine that is indicated on the container. Always pay attention to the expiration date; 3. Mix the water with the chlorine and wait 30 minutes; 4. Drink the disinfected water in a clean glass or cup. It's better to keep the chlorinated water in a plastic drum with a tap.
